While much of the Middle
East participated in the Arab Spring, Saudi Arabia was one of the
countries that did not have any mass demonstrations. So it is
interesting to see the top cleric in Saudi Arabia call the people who
use twitter essentially clowns.
The so called twitter revolution may not have hit Saudi Arabia hard, the amount of people who use twitter in the country is still outstanding. Over half of their internet users use twitter and he is openly insulting them. In response to his remarks people have come forward with two different conclusions. One is that his remark is rather ignorant and “not appropriate”, while another is that he was only talking about certain twitter users who spread lies and try to corrupt the youth.
People may argue
about what he meant, what is important is that he openly opposes the
use of twitter within Saudi Arabia. For a country known for
censorship to a degree, what could this mean for the future of
twitter in Saudi Arabia? Also if the government were to take any
drastic actions, what kind of response will the people have?
