Hamas re-elects Khaled Meshaal as political leader

The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas has re-elected Khaled Meshaal as its political leader, officials said.Meshaal has headed Hamas, the group that governs the Gaza Strip, since the assassination of its founder, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, in 2004.

It's interesting to note that Khaled Meshaal himself had indicated last year that he would not be seeking a new term. However, even if it was against his wishes, the party's governing Shura council re-elected him for another foour years at a meeting in the Egyptian capital Cairo late on Monday.

Another note worth mentioning is that as leader of Hamas, Khaled has agreed to delicate truce between Israel this past November and has been seeking to heal wounds between his group and Fatah.
