Assassinations due to nearing elections

With the Iraqi elections nearing, there have been numerous attacks, including kidnapping and murders of Sunni candidates. At least fifteen candidates, all members of the minority Sunni community, have been assassinated. While many others have received threatening messages demanding that they withdraw.

“Killing candidates means instilling fear,” said Hameed Fadhil, a political-science professor at Baghdad University. “And that is why I think it will affect voter participation, because I don’t think that people will want to risk their lives again.”

Violence has always been intertwined with politics throughout Iraq. These acts make it so the votes become skewed due to the fear that is instilled throughout the communities.
