Today the fighting continued in Syria with a car
bomb that detonated at the Syrian Central Bank, across the street from a
primary school in Damascus. Jayda al-Kanna was cooking in her kitchen
above the school when the blast shook a six foot hole in her living room wall.
The Syrian government blames its opposition for the explosion that killed 15
and wounded at least another 53.
The use of car bombs has taken a
terrible toll on the people of Syria. Both the government and some rebel
factions have been enraged by the use of them. The people are much more fearful
now with the use of car bombs since they are usually used to target busy city
areas. Before their use the fighting was limited to small arms and road side
bombs targeting Syrian security forces. The people are now witnessing a scene
similar to Iraq with many check points and blast walls.
Some people of the opposition have
actually accused the government of using the car bombs to make the uprising
seem brutal and unfavorable. This myth was debunked when an extremist group
Nusra Front began claiming the attacks were theirs.
The war in Syria has been going on
for two years now and it doesn’t seem to be making any progress. Attacks are
still very common and innocent civilians are being killed in the streets. Like
many problems in the Middle East we are off on the sidelines and left wondering
what to do about it.
