The documentary, "This is Not a Film"
depicts Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi under house arrest
while awaiting his trial for a film he shot deemed "anti-state." If guilty, the sentencing
includes a 6 year prison statement and a 20 year ban on making movies...
Now, for anyone that understands film this is borderline nonsensical. Films usually come from the mind of a single individual, the director, for the most part. Cinema, at its most superficial, uses emotions to get ideas to an audience. While all art, film included, strives to show society it's own self; flaws, strengths, etc. With these elements alone, any film could be an "anti-state" film, then used against the creator. One can't help but see the absurdity in it.
Regardless, the documentary itself shows a man going against government and government striking back by isolating and silencing him, as you do. Now, according to an over-arching theme in the COR division, "society is a macrocosm of the individual, and the individual is a
microcosm of the society" and that is what this film is all about. It shows an individual being a prisoner in his own home, not being able to express himself while passionately trying to maintain and preserve his identity.
