Four months before the Iranian election
for President, Green movement leader Mousavi's daughters are
arrested. During the 2009 election, where Ahmadinejad won, there was
an outcry from Mousavi and his supporters that the election was
rigged. What ensued was days of protests and the formation of the
Green Movement. Since then Mousavi and his wife have been put under
house arrest and the Green Movement has lost its influence. In order
to communicate to the outside world, Mousavi is forced to send
messages through his daughters. Even if the group has lost its
standing, I do not believe that Mousavi's daughters being arrested
this close to the election is a coincidence.
There are two things that could come
from their arrests. The first is that it could effectively silence
any hope for the Green Movement to live on through Mousavi's
daughters. Or it could cause another series of outrage and get the
Green Movement back on its feet. Either way it is going to be
interesting to see if Iran attempts to squash any other opposition
before the election.
