Blog Post #1 - Syria in Conflict

The article selected titled, “Syria conflict causing ‘staggering’ humanitarian crisis” discusses the current state of Syria and the Syrian people. Begging with a call to action by the International Rescue Committee for the world improve its response to the 600,000 plus Syrians who have fled the country. Other astonishing statistics include two million plus Syrians who are believed to be internally displaced within the country, over 60,000 civilian have been killed since the beginning of the conflict in March 2011, and the “level of rape and sexual violence occurring in the conflict is ‘horrific’”.

According to the International Rescue Committee, the primary reason cited by refugees for leaving Syria is rape. Also the World Food Program is providing aid for 1.5 million Syrians as they simultaneously fight for the ability is the Tartus port.

Lastly, the Human Rights Watch has “accused the army of expanding its use of cluster munitions”, which are banned by 111 nations. Other weapons being used include ground-based rocket launchers, air attacks, and short-range Scud-style ballistic missiles in addition to the slue of assault rifles by individuals.

This article connects to the course because it describes the current state of affairs in Syria, highlighting the magnitude of the issue. Personally, I was unaware of the enormity of this historical issue.
